The
Painting System

During my semester in painting, my professor Casey encouraged me to bring my technical background in design into the course. I experimented with unconventional tools, including a battery-powered mini mixer for acrylics and calipers to control spacing and tolerances in Translucent Horizons. To support this workflow, I built a modular painting system that keeps tools organized, reduces setup friction, and encourages iteration. The system expanded organically over the semester as I developed new skills. Using it, I produced The Presidio, Translucent Horizons, and additional works since last fall.

This painting (16×20) is based on a photograph I took in the Presidio. It is a hand-drawn, hand-painted reconstruction of that scene. I was interested in how the trees act as a natural frame, creating a strong foreground of silhouettes that partially obscures the calm Golden Gate Bridge, surrounded by fog.

I completed the piece using the painting system I designed. This work reflects a landscape that was part of my everyday environment while attending The Bay School. It’s a place where our community would come to practice mindfulness. It’s also where I learned how to run for the first time.

Generous chamfers improve safety and comfort allowing paints to be secure but easily replaced. Supporting a flexible workflow.

Dissatisfied with existing paint organization systems, I designed and fabricated a modular setup around Liquitex Soft Acrylics using CAD, 3D printing, and a laser-cut base adapted from the open-source Gridfinity system.
